John Terry Biography

An experienced international defender who is one of the cornerstones of the Chelsea defence, serving as centre back and club captain.

Undeniably the greatest success of the club’s modern-era academy system, he is one of the few home produced players in the current squad. John started his footballing career as a midfielder but moved to central defence as a youngster and soon progressed to the first team.

He made his senior debut in a Carling Cup tie with Aston Villa in October 1998 and the following season had a brief loan spell at Nottingham Forest before returning to establish himself at Stamford Bridge later that same year. Twice a winner of the club’s Player of the Year award, John became a regular starter, replacing Marcel Desailly as partner to William Gallas.

In 2003 Claudio Ranieri gave him the captain’s armband, and the following year Jose Mourinho named him club captain. John lifted back-to-back League titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06, with a third arriving in 2009-10, and has led the Blues to three FA Cups and two League Cups. He was also a member of the Chelsea team that finished runners-up in the 2008 Champions League final, the Blues only missing out in a penalty shoot-out. He finally got his hands on the trophy four years later but missed the final against Bayern Munich due to suspension.

John made his England debut against Serbia & Montenegro in June 2003 and a year later had established himself as a first choice.

Captain of his country from August 2006 until the beginning of 2010 and then again from early 2011 until mid-2012, he currently has a total of 77 caps.
